Mobile Monday August - TRAI’s consultation paper on VAS

The August event of Mobile Monday Mumbai will be held on August 18th, 2008 to discuss TRAI’s consultation paper on mobile value-added-services.

It is an important paper which will influence the regulator’s policy for the growth and regulation of the VAS industry. Some of the key issues that TRAI addressed in the consultation paper comprises the need to bring uniformity in the licensing conditions of mobile telecom operators, the need to include Value Added Service Providers under the licensing regime, importance of allocating short codes for value added services to guarantee uniformity amongst all the telecom operators and the obligation of protecting copyrights.

The paper can be downloaded from its website or read online here.

MoMo - July Event Report

MoMo was back with a bang after the brief lull created by the lack of an event in June. The excitement was evident in the room as eager and restless entrepreneurs debated the present and future of advertising around the mobile web in an evolving industry. Zubair Jandali of AdMob satiated the endless stream of questions by addressing the group on impressions, pricing and growth rates.
A case was again made for the creation of local content centered around the interests of local communities as a majority of sites visited still originate from outside the country. It was, however, expressed that innovation in this space is inhibited by the perpetual presence of operators as gate keepers of the mobile world.
The future of publishing and advertising, however, looks bright as 3G services are expected to be rolled out and devices such as the iphone and other mobile web acessing devices become more prevalent; for a taste of what lies in the future: AdMob itself serves over 300 million adds to Indian users per month.
